Places to Visit: Kirkby Lonsdale

Blog

Set close to the ever popular Lake District, the town of Kirkby Lonsdale is one of the North’s hidden gems. Staying in one of our caravan sites puts you in the perfect place for exploring this historic town.

Here at McCarthy Caravans we have a number of parks situated in Lancashire. Each of these offer the ideal accommodation for relaxing and exploring the local countryside.

About the Location

The small and historic town of Kirkby Lonsdale is situated in Cumbria. It is perfectly located for exploring the scenic countryside and there are endless places to visit. Life here can be traced back into the Neolithic period and there are remains of a stone circle in nearby Casterton Fell. Alongside this, there are also traces of Celtic settlements around the area.

Today the town has a modest population of around 1,800 and is home to biker’s haven Devil’s Bridge. This goes over the River Lune and is thought to date back to at least 1370. The legend suggests that the bridge was built by the Devil in exchange for the first soul that crossed over it. To this day it is popular with visitors and provides the ideal space for enjoying a picnic in the outdoors.

Eating and Drinking

If you’re looking for a place to rest and enjoy local food, then Kirkby Lonsdale always has a perfect option for you. For those who enjoy pubs, then you are spoilt for choice. The Red Dragon Inn and The Sun Inn have been providing food for visitors for a number of years. They both offer local cuisine and their menus are available online.

If you prefer to get a take out, then Jingling Lane Chippy is a local favourite. Other places to eat and drink include the Lunesdale Bakery, The Royal Barn, and The Snooty Fox.

Local Attractions

If you are staying in one of our caravan sites, then you are close enough to explore this wonderful location. One of the best sights in the area can be found at Ruskin’s View. This hidden gem can be found behind St Mary the Virgin’s churchyard. Once there, there is a stunning view over the Lune Valley as well as Underley Hall.

Whilst there, you can enjoy the beautiful architecture of St Mary’s Church. This building was first built in the Norman period and is still today an important part of the community. For those who want to explore Kirkby Lonsdale, then there are plenty of independent and local shops.
