Places To Visit: Ambleside

Blog

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Lake District has millions of visitors each year. With plenty of culture, history and nature to enjoy, it’s no wonder that many tourists want to visit Ambleside.

Our blog this week at McCarthy Caravan Parks focuses on Ambleside, giving you an insight into the quaint location.

History of Ambleside

One of the towns that experiences the most visitors is Ambleside. Situated just above Lake Windermere, there is a population of around 2,500 who call this home. It was once counted as part of the historic county of Westmorland but became part of the Lake District after boundary changes in the 1970s.

It is thought that the name comes from the Old Norse for river or sandbank and traces of the Roman period still remain. After Ambleside was granted a market charter in 1650, it became a hub of trade for agriculture and wool.

Over the years the town has also been home by a number of famous faces. From the poet William Wordsworth to Harriet Martineau, it’s always been an attractive place to rest.

Places to Visit

For those who enjoy arts and culture, then The Armitt Museum, Gallery and Library is an ideal place to visit. Here they hold regular exhibitions showcasing the local area. There is also the 17th Century Bridge House which has had a variety of uses over the years. The building was saved from disrepair by residents in the 1930s who took part in fundraising money to help conserve a well-loved piece of history.

When it comes to the outdoors, you’re spoilt for choice. Rothay Park, close to St Mary’s Church, is an ideal place to spend time with family and pets. Other locations worth visiting include the remains of the Roman Fort and Stock Ghyll Force.
